What to Look for in a New Vet?

Finding a vet for your dog or cat with whom you can build a relationship is essential. Whether you've just moved, got your first pet, or had an unpleasant experience elsewhere, you want to know your pet is in safe hands with your new vet. Below, we look at how to find a good veterinarian and some of the key qualities to look for in a new vet.

A Family Approach

A family approach means a vet providing a level of care and attentiveness for you and your pet much in the same way a family doctor would. For example, do they talk to your pet, give them treats and make them feel comfortable? Is the vet approachable, listens well and helps you feel comfortable asking any questions you have? A good relationship with your vet relies on communication, shared values, and the feeling that your vet will give you confidence in the way they diagnose and treat your pet.

Extensive Experience

Look for a practice with decades of proven veterinary success. The biggest challenge for vets is that our pets can’t tell us what’s wrong. Without the right experience and level of attentiveness, it’s possible to miss vital clues or signs of a potentially serious condition developing. An excellent and long standing track record in veterinary care is therefore an essential aspect of ensuring accurate diagnoses, and the promise of faster and lower risk surgical procedures.

Diagnostics and Surgery

Ideally, you want your pet to be able to receive any and all treatment they need at the same place from diagnostics to surgery. This offers both convenience and can save precious time if they are seriously sick or injured. A good veterinary practice will give you access to a wide range of services such as blood pressure monitoring, ultrasound, dermatology, dentistry and more. Knowing the full scope of services your vet provides can give you peace of mind if your pet needs emergency treatment.

Reputation

Before you consider any veterinarian practice, make sure they’re accredited by the Accreditation Program for Australian Veterinarians (APAV). You may also want to check out the qualifications held by the vet, and the veterinary assistants and nurses.
