Veterinary Ultrasound

Colour digital, Doppler ultrasonography operated by qualified ultrasonographers allows a detailed examination of internal organs and the detection of abnormal tissue. Digital ultrasound is vital for the examination of a patient with an internal soft tissue lesion. Colour Doppler allows the ultrasonographer to examine an organ or lesion and observe if its blood supply is abnormal.

If your vet has recommended that your cat or dog undergo an ultrasound scan, there is no need for alarm. Understand that this is a common diagnostic tool that is used in order to get to the root of any underlying issues. Please book an appointment at our clinic to secure your pet’s place.

Does my pet need an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a completely painless procedure where your pet is sedated for their own comfort. The patient is then clipped around the abdominal or chest area so there is less interruption from the fur to the probe. Ultrasounds use sound waves to create an image of a body part. Using a handheld probe, the veterinarian will move across the surface of the skin over the site of concern.

There are a few reasons why your pet may need an ultrasound, with common reasons listed below:

Heart conditions

If your cat or dog has a heart condition, an ultrasound can be useful in detecting irregularities. Known as an echocardiogram, this type of ultrasound can decipher whether your pet will need heart medication.

Abnormal blood or urine test results

An abdominal ultrasound will be required if your vet has found abnormalities in your pet’s blood or urine test results. This type of ultrasound will provide a visual representation of the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder and other internal organs.

Examination of other soft tissues

From thyroid glands to eyes, ligaments and tendons, an ultrasound can detect any abnormalities in soft tissue.

Detection of foreign objects

An ultrasound can detect paper, fabrics or plant material that your pet may have ingested, causing your feline or canine to fall ill.

Fetal development

Ultrasounds can determine whether your cat or dog is pregnant by counting the number of heartbeats.
