FELINE DISEASES
Pelger syndrome
This is a rare condition of domestic shorthaired cats that is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant condition. The white blood cells appear abnormal whereby they resemble immature cells. This can create confusion when assessing blood samples in cases of infection however it doesnt seem to effect the function of these white blood cells. Individuals who are heterozygous (one recessive and one dominant gene) will be clinically normal. Homozygous dominant kittens however generally die before birth and therefore litter sizes may be decreased as a result.
