Metaldahyde Poisoning

Metaldahyde is a component of many snail and slug baits. Signs of poisoning generally start within 1 hour and include incoordination, muscle tremors, salivation, frothing and convulsions. Treatment varies according to the stage of poisoning. Early cases are induced to vomit and sedated. More advanced cases may require anesthesia, stomach wash, and intravenous drip. Because metaldahyde is quite slowly absorbed from the gut it may be necessary to keep severe cases anaesthetized for upto 24 hours. Death can occur from respiratory failure, liver failure or acidosis (change in the chemical balance of the body).
