FELINE DISEASES

Hypotrichosis
Hypotrichosis is an inherited condition characterized by less hair than normal. This condition has actually become a breed status in the Cornish, Devon Rex, Sphinx and Mexican hairless cats. In the Siamese it is recognized as an autosomal recessive trait and occasionally in the Devon Rex it becomes more pronounced than is normal for that breed.

Affected Siamese cats appear normal at birth, but then go bald by 2 weeks of age. Some hair may regrow around 8-10 weeks of age but total alopecia (hair loss) occurs by 6 months of age. Diagnosis would be based on a biopsy (sample of tissue taken for examination under a microscope).

Affected animals and their relatives should not be used for breeding. There is no treatment available for the alopecia, but cats with rancid, oily skin can benefit from degreasing shampoos.
