Foreign Body in Throat

Something stuck in the throat is one of the most common things suspected by owners when their pet starts coughing or gagging. It is however a rare finding. A number of reflexes which operate in throat (larynx) work very effectively to expel any foreign object lodging in the area.

Occasionally however spiky objects such as needles or cooked chicken bones can become stuck in larynx causing repeated coughing and gagging. Pressing on the throat area will generally trigger signs of pain and produce further gagging. The object may be visible when examining the awake animal but a general anaesthetic is often required to effectively view the whole area. Some sharp objects may damage the throat in the process of being swallowed without necessarily becoming lodged producing very similar signs.
