FELINE DISEASES

Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta
Epitheliogenesis imperfecta is a rare heritable condition of cats. The method of inheritance has not yet been determined.

Affected kittens are born with glistening, red regions on their skin or mucous membranes (eg: lining of mouth and inside nose) and that are caused by a lack of the superficial (outer) skin layer. These ulcers usually become infected and the kittens normally die from septicaemia (infection throughout the body, spread via the blood stream) or are eaten by the queen.

Small areas can be surgically corrected but larger defects cannot be practically corrected and will invariably be fatal. No affected animal or its relatives should be used for breeding.
