FELINE DISEASES

Carnasial (tooth root) abscess

Infected tooth roots of the upper molars can lead to swelling below or behind the eye (carnassial abscess). Where the infection builds up behind the eye it is pushed forward causing it to bulge out of the socket. This condition must be distinguished from glaucoma which is swelling of the eye itself.

Treatment requires antibiotics, removal of the effected tooth, and establishing drainage either through the tooth root cavity into the mouth or by lancing skinover the abscess.
