Bites and stings
Reactions to bites or stings from insects are a very common cause
of swelling to face and limbs of animals. The swelling occurs
very rapidly and mostly effects the skin around the lips, muzzle.
or eyes. The thickening of the skin is usually spread rather than
forming a distinct lump. Some animals will develop a more serious (anaphylactic) reaction
with lumps (wheals) appearing over the whole body. This may be
accompanied by trembling, panting, and can lead to shock. Antihistamines and corticosteroids are used to treat this condition
giving a quite rapid reduction in the size of the swellings. Anaphylactic
reactions which have reached a more advance state may require
adrenaline (epinephrine) and other supportive measures such as
oxygen. Related sites |
