CANINE DISEASES

Pregnancy

Pregnancy in a dog lasts for an average of 63 days. Signs of pregnancy include enlargement of the abdomen and mammary glands (breasts). Ultrasound can be used to detect pregnancy from 28 days and Xray from 42 days. Most dogs will produce milk in the last week of pregnancy and start nesting behavior (digging holes and ripping paper etc.) several days before giving birth. In most bitches their body temperature will also drop to 37?C or below in the 48 hours before birth.

False pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) occurs in small number of bitches where they show many signs of being pregnant without having conceived.
