Azalea (Rhododendron spp.

The entire plant is toxic Salivation and vomiting are seen within 6 hours of eating the plant. Slowing of the heart, weakness and collapse may follow. Deaths have been reported. Treatment involves emptying the stomach and Atropine where the heart is slowed.

Daffodil/Jonquil (Narcissus spp.)

Although the entire plant is poisonous the greatest concentration of toxin is in the bulbs. Toxic signs are vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Rarely tremors and convulsions are seen. Treatment involves emptying the stomach and supportive therapy.

Foxglove (Digitalis spp.)

The entire plant including water from vases holding the plant can be toxic Toxic signs of salivation, gum irritation, and vomiting occur shortly after eating the plant. The heart can also be effected displaying a range of rhythmdisturbances which can be severe enough to cause death. Treatment includes emptying the stomach and therapy directed at the heart. A newer drug Digibind (Glaxo Welcome) given at the rate of 60mg/kg IV may be of benefit in treating the major cardiac toxin.

Hyacinth

The bulb is the main toxic part of the plant Hyacinths are reported to cause vomiting and abdominal discomfort Treatment includes emptying the stomach

Hydrangea spp.

The entire plant is poisonous. This is not a common poisoning of small animals but the signs include vomiting and diarrhoea which may contain blood. Hydrangeas are known to contain a cyanide like toxin however the signs produced by this component of breathing difficulties are rarely seen. Treatment is symptomatic

Mistletoe (Viscum album)

The entire plant is poisonous especially the berries Vomiting and diarrhoea are commonly observed several hours after eating the plant. Some animals experience a drop in body temperature, dilated pupils, and nervous signs such as seizures. In more severe poisonings signs can progress to shock, destruction of red blood cells, and collapse leading to death. Treatment involves emptying the stomach and supportive measures including blood transfusions where severe red blood cell loss is evident

Oleander (Nerium spp.)

The entire plant is toxic to animals. Signs of poisoning include abdominal pain, vomiting, salivation and irritation of the gums. The heart can also be effected leading to weakness, staggering, even collapse and death. Some animals become delirious leading to a coma. Treatment involves emptying the stomach and specific therapy of heart symptoms. Phenytion is commonly used for treating the heart arrhythmia's

Privet (Ligustra spp.)

Both the leaves and berries of Privet are toxic This is not a common poisoning of small animals. Vomiting and diarrhoea with blood, collapse and convulsions have all been seen in humans. Kidney failure and death have also been reported. Treatment is symptomatic

Wisteria

Poisoning is via the seeds and pods This is not a common poisoning of small animals. Signs are related to the gut with vomiting and some diarrhoea. Collapse can occur in severe cases. Treatment includes emptying the stomach and supportive measures such as intravenous fluids.
