Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease
Legg-Calve´-Perthes disease is aseptic necrosis (non-infectious
death) of the bone of the femoral head (ball of the hip). This
condition is seen in young small breeds of dog. For reasons which are not known the blood supply to the femoral
head is disrupted causing it to gradually dissolve. Damage to
to joint surfaces leads to arthritis and moderate lameness. The recommended treatment is removal of the femoral head allowing
the hip to form a fibrous false joint. There may be a genetic predisposition for this condition in some
small breeds of dog such as toy poodles. Related sites |
