Elongated Soft Palate
The soft palate is a flap which extends from the back of the roof
of the mouth (hard palate) to cover the opening to the airway
(epiglottis) during swallowing. Short faced (brachycephalic) breeds of dogs tend to have a relatively
long soft palate. This can partially cover the epiglottis at times
other than swallowing interfering with breathing and triggering
coughing episodes. In severe cases the soft palate may be sucked
onto the epiglottis completely obstructing the airway, only releasing
when the dog loses consciousness. Episodes are often triggered
by excitement or exercise. Conditions which cause swelling in
the throat such as infection may also make the condition worse.
These dogs commonly snore when sleeping. Treatment is usually reserved for more severe cases and involves
surgical shortening of the soft palate. Related sites |
