Smooth Coated Collie

The Smooth Coated Collie has never enjoyed the popularity of its better known relative the Rough Coat Collie but both trace their history back to working sheepdogs in Scotland. The Smooth Coated Collie was principally a drover's dog used for guiding cows and sheep to market and did not require the profuse coat of the variety which stood guard over the flocks at pasture. In all other requirements the two varieties are identical.

No longer in demand as a herder, today's Collie has transferred these abilities to serving as a devoted family dog, with a particular affinity for small children. Never happier than when he has a job to do, the Collie delights in adopting the dual role of nanny and watchdog.

The Smooth Collie's short, flat coat with very dense undercoat comes in tonings of sable and white, tricolour or blue merle and requires a minimum of grooming.

Like all working dogs, the Smooth Coat Collie needs regular exercise to keep him in trim. Intuitive and a nxious to please, he also responds well to training.

The Smooth Collie stands 51-61 cm in height and weighs 18 to 29 kg.
