Mastiff

Renowned as a superlative fighting dog in days of old, the Mastiff accompanied knights into battle, was used in packs to hunt lion, deer and wolf, as well as being a combatant in leopard, bear and bull-baiting competitions, (not to mention being pitted against human gladiators in the Roman Circus!).

Despite this chequered background, the Mastiff has developed into an outstanding family dog. A combination of grandness and good nature, courage and docility, the Mastiff makes a quiet, dignified and affectionate pet. He is extremely patient with children and smaller animals plus, it goes without saying, is a consummate protector and guard dog.

Befitting his massive size, he consumes a large amount of food, but although his feeding needs are considerable, his grooming requirements are minimal. He does, however, require a large yard and regular exercise.

His height is approximately 75 to 80 cm, and he weighs around 70 to 90 kg.
