© Kirrawee Veterinary Hospital, February 2000 Wire-Haired Fox Terrier
The Wire-Haired Fox Terrier was developed from the old rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier of Wales, plus various other rough-haired terriers from the Durham and Derbyshire districts of England. Originally used for fox-bolting, he had to be small enough to enter a fox-earth or drain, yet large enough to run with the hounds. As with all terriers of that period (conditioned as they were to receiving more kicks than dinners!) he was a fairly scrappy little character.
Today he is still just as much the cheeky little devil as he ever was - full of fun and fire, and always ready to have a go at anything, no matter how much bigger than him. Particularly intelligent and affectionate, he is an impulsive, extroverted and lovable little dynamo.
He resembles the Smooth-Haired Terrier in all respects except for his coat. The Wire-Haired Fox Terrier has a harsh, broken coat that needs to be tidied up and trimmed regularly if he is not going to look like the kitchen mop!
He is up to 39 cm in height, and weighs in at around 8 kg.
