1.

Use a relatively long focal length and a wide aperture (eg f5.6) so the background is out of focus.

2.

Use a fast film (400ASA) with a shutter speed of at least 125th/sec.

3.

Use available light.

4.

If the bird is outside in an aviary take out all the branches or perches except one so you can position the bird as desired.

5.

Place the camera and tripod in a good position, focus on the branch or perch you anticipate the bird (s) to use and leave it so the bird(s) become used to it.

6.

Try and fill the frame as much as possible.

7.

Use a remote shutter release from a distance, or from behind a hide.

8.

Avoid sudden movement and noise.

9.

Use a seed feeder or tray to attract wild birds in the garden, and follow tips 5,6,7 and 8.

10.

Be patient!
